Should parents be allowed to manipulate the child's DNA?

Should parents be allowed to manipulate the child's DNA ?
In my opinion I don't think the parent has any right to determine the DNA for their child because not only is it morally wrong, but also genetically dangerous. First, i would have to say that the reason why it is morally wrong to genetically control the outcome of a human life is because nature is the final judge of what the organism looks like or becomes. By controlling the result of the human DNA defines the theory of natural selection by Charles Darwin. Then we go as far as breaking scientific laws. When we start to mess with nature that should only be controlled by nature itself we are putting ourselves in serious danger and the lives of young organisms who haven't even had a taste of life yet. Also what would making a DNA controlled baby do anything for you. Here is a document i found that explains how the genetics work.

Second of all where in any of this does the child have a right to it's own life and what it looks like. Just like John Locke states natural rights which are the rights of life liberty and property. By allowing the parents to control this life you are striping the organism of it's natural rights which are given to everyone no matter what. Nature is not a force to be messed with and it could get dangerous if you try bending the rules even just a little bit. I think that you should be proud of your child and the way she/he looks because they are natural. The best beauty in the world is natural beauty. Everyone is unique and it should stay that way. When we have control over something as big as that it should be no doubt that it is a threat to nature and our society. So in any case the rights of a human child or any child of any thing should not be genetically controlled because it's not only morally wrong within the laws of nature, it is also dangerous and threatening to the society and the community around it.

  1. I agree with you that it is morally corrupt to manipulate children, but there are some special cases. What if you knew your child was going to have a disease/disability that would prevent them from performing as well as everyone else. It could have the potential to make them an outcast. If you could change your child's DNA to prevent suffering, would you then do it?

  2. Although i agree with you that Special cases could be different, but what happens if you try to genetically change something because a defect and it only becomes worse. If the child is having problems then there are only precautions that they could be taking when the child is out of the womb which are much more safe and affective for the child.
