My Thoughs through Cisneros words!

In the book The house on Mango Street the author Sandra Cisneros uses symbolism to represent a lot of deep topics that show up in life. One topic that she symbolizes is if boys and girls should be raised the same way and equally. In a vignette called "Alicia Who Sees Mice" Cisneros some what puts her implication on this topic a bit.

"Alicia, who's mama died, is sorry there is no one older to rise and make the lunchbox tortillas."(pg.31)

Here you can see that Cisneros shows that Alicia is automatically chosen too step in as the parent and is forced to take on responsibilities that an adult would have to do even though she is merely a child. You can see that Cisneros is trying to imply that boys and girls are treated different. She shows how even though Alicia is still young she is forced to take on the mom responsibilities that she would not usually have to have. She shows that if it's because she is the oldest then why doesn't her dad step in and be a parent. Why should she have to step up and be a parent. The dad should be the one who is taking responsibility of being the head of the house.
